The Long Marriage of Brett and Deanna Favre
Brett Favre is widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. Over his 20-year career, which spanned from 1991 to 2010, Favre established countless records and led his teams to numerous playoff appearances and Super Bowl victories. However, he did not achieve all of this success alone – by his side through it all was his high school sweetheart and now wife of over 25 years, Deanna Tynes Favre.
Brett and Deanna have one of the longest and most enduring marriages in professional sports. While their relationship faced difficulties early on and several challenges throughout Favre’s career, their bond and commitment to one another has remained strong. Through both the highs of victory and lows of personal struggles, Deanna has been Brett’s rock and biggest supporter. Their marriage is a testament to the power of love and partnership.
Early Years
Brett and Deanna have known each other since they were quite young, growing up together in the small town of Kiln, Mississippi. Reports indicate they met when Deanna was around 7 years old, as their families frequently interacted in the close-knit community. However, it would be many years before their relationship turned romantic.
In high school, Brett and Deanna began dating and quickly fell for one another. They dated all through their school years and remained a couple when Brett went off to the University of Southern Mississippi to play football on scholarship. Even with the distance, their bond only grew stronger.
After Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1991 NFL Draft, Deanna made the move with him to Georgia to continue their life together. However, Favre struggled to break into the starting lineup and was traded to the Green Bay Packers in 1992. Once again, Deanna supported the relocation and moved with Brett to Wisconsin, where their professional football journey was just beginning.
Early Marriage and Family
On July 14, 1996, after dating for many years, Brett and Deanna finally wed in a Catholic ceremony in their hometown of Kiln. The young couple was just starting their lives and careers together.
In 1997, Deanna gave birth to their first child, Brittany. Two years later in 1999, she welcomed their second daughter, Breleigh. Having children so early in Brett’s NFL path placed added pressures on the pair but also gave them joy and purpose as a family.
Through it all, Deanna was fully dedicated to supporting Brett’s career while also raising their daughters. She took on the traditional role of an NFL wife but did so with immense strength, grace, and commitment to their unit.
Facing Adversity
Despite presenting a picture of happiness, the Favres hit a crisis point in their marriage in 1999. Brett was struggling with alcohol abuse, which took a major toll on both his personal and professional life. According to reports, his drinking caused arguments and strains in the relationship.
Feeling at her wit’s end, Deanna threatened to leave Brett if he did not seek help. This ultimatum was what pushed Favre to enter an inpatient alcohol rehabilitation program for the second time. In later interviews, he credited Deanna with saving his life and career during that dark period.
After rehab, Brett recommitted to Deanna and their family as well as sobriety. He managed to stay sober and went on to have one of the best seasons of his career that same year. All these years later, Favre still expresses immense gratitude to his wife for her intervention, without which he may not have overcome his demons.
Deanna’s Battle with Cancer
In 2004, Deanna faced her own serious health crisis when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 33. The diagnosis came as a tremendous shock, especially as both of her grandmothers had also battled the disease.
Thankfully, Deanna’s cancer was detected early, and she underwent a lumpectomy as well as radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Brett was by her side throughout it all, supporting her with love and care. After an understandably difficult process, Deanna fully recovered.
Her experience with cancer had a profound impact on both her and Brett. It inspired Deanna to become an advocate for breast cancer awareness and research. She has since worked diligently to help others fighting the disease. For Brett, seeing his wife persevere through such a scary time only deepened his love, respect, and appreciation for her strength.
Continued Support Through Brett’s Later Career
Even as Brett entered his late 30s and 40s, well past the average NFL retirement age, Deanna continued backing his decisions fully. She endured plenty of criticism from those claiming he should walk away, yet she trusted her husband’s abilities and passion for the game.
When Brett decided to finish his career with brief stints with the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings in 2010, Deanna moved their family once more for his final seasons. Only after he was truly ready to hang up his cleats did she support that choice too.
Throughout it all, Deanna was the ultimate football wife – handling family responsibilities, making countless moves, enduring rumors and gossip, and always presenting a united front publicly with Brett. Her dedication to their life and marriage remained unwavering, even as other relationships in the NFL faltered under similar pressures.
Life After Football
Now enjoying retirement in Mississippi, Brett and Deanna seem as in love and committed as ever after over 25 years of marriage. They dote on their grandchildren and remain actively involved in their community.
Brett has called Deanna his “rock” and credited her with being the backbone of his career. She has said Brett is her soulmate and best friend. Despite facing down alcoholism, cancer, rumors, and endless NFL scrutiny, their bond has persevered.
The Favres present a shining example of the power of partnership, support, and compromise in a long-term marriage. Even after all these years, their deep care, respect, and affection for one another is evident. Football may have been Brett’s professional passion, but Deanna has undoubtedly been the love of his life.
