Tom Brady is widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. Over the course of his 22-year career, Brady has won 7 Super Bowls, 5 Super Bowl MVP awards, and 3 NFL MVP awards. His list of accomplishments is unmatched in the history of professional football. However, Brady’s journey to becoming an NFL legend was not solely due to his own talent and dedication – his family played a pivotal supporting role in fueling his success every step of the way.
Brady comes from a close-knit family based in San Mateo, California. He was born in 1977 to parents Galynn Patricia and Tom Brady Sr. Galynn and Tom Sr. have now been married for over 55 years. Brady has three older sisters – Maureen, Julie, and Nancy. Growing up, Brady was surrounded by a loving and supportive family environment.
From a young age, Brady’s parents nurtured his love of sports. They encouraged all four of their children to be active and try different sports. As a kid, Brady played baseball, basketball, and football. However, it was football that really captured his interest and passion. Brady Sr. would often take the young Brady to 49ers games at Candlestick Park, fueling his admiration for the sport.
In high school, Brady began to show real promise as a quarterback at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo. However, he was far from a star player and Division I colleges did not heavily recruit him. This likely added extra motivation as Brady sought to prove himself. Throughout it all, Brady’s family continued to encourage and support his football dreams, attending every game and practice. They believed in Brady’s talent and work ethic even when others were skeptical.
During Brady’s senior year of high school, his mother Galynn was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was understandably a difficult time for the entire Brady family. However, Galynn underwent treatment and made a full recovery. Her battle with cancer likely instilled resilience in Brady that would serve him well throughout his football career. It also strengthened the already close bond between Brady and his family.
After graduating high school in 1995, Brady chose to walk on at the University of Michigan to play football. As a non-scholarship player, Brady had to earn his spot on the team through hard work and dedication. His family’s encouragement and work ethic rubbed off on Brady as he put in long hours training. Over his college career, Brady developed into the starting quarterback. He led Michigan to a 33-10 record as a starter and helped the Wolverines win the Orange Bowl in his senior year.
Despite his success at Michigan, Brady was still not viewed as an elite NFL prospect. He was selected in the 6th round with the 199th overall pick by the New England Patriots in the 2000 NFL Draft. Many considered this a reach by the Patriots and doubted Brady would ever amount to more than a career backup. However, Brady was motivated to prove the doubters wrong. He leaned on the support of his family as he embarked on his professional football journey.
In Brady’s rookie season, he began as the fourth-string quarterback but worked relentlessly to move up the depth chart. During a Week 2 game against the New York Jets, starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe went down with an injury. This opened the door for Brady to take over as the starter. Over the next few games, Brady began to display the poise, intelligence and leadership skills that would define his career. He led the Patriots to an 11-3 record down the stretch and an AFC East division title. However, the team lost in the playoffs, and Bledsoe was expected to regain his starting job the following season.
Once again, Brady’s family played a pivotal role during this uncertain time in his career. They encouraged him to keep working hard and staying focused on improving, rather than worrying about external factors like the quarterback competition. That offseason, Brady spent long hours training with his personal quarterback coach, throwing to his sisters and high school teammates. He continued developing the mental and physical tools necessary to succeed at football’s highest level.
In 2001, Brady earned the Patriots’ starting job out of training camp and had a breakout season. He led the Patriots to a 11-5 record and an AFC East division title. Then in the playoffs, Brady helped deliver one of the greatest Super Bowl victories of all time. Down 17-3 against the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, Brady engineered the largest comeback in Super Bowl history to win 20-17. He was named Super Bowl MVP, cementing his status as a rising star in the NFL.
This marked the beginning of Brady’s dynasty with the Patriots. Over the next two decades, he would lead New England to 9 Super Bowl appearances, winning 6 of them. Brady’s unprecedented success was fueled by his relentless work ethic and attention to detail. Those traits were instilled in him from a young age by his supportive family. Throughout all of Brady’s accomplishments, his parents, sisters and family remained his biggest cheerleaders.
Even as Brady’s stardom grew, family remained his top priority. In high-pressure playoff games and Super Bowls, Brady often credited his family as a source of calm and perspective. He made sure to carve out family time during the offseason to recharge. Brady married supermodel Gisele Bündchen in 2009 and they have two children together – Benjamin and Vivian. Brady also has a son Jack from a previous relationship.

Brady makes spending quality time with his family a non-negotiable, even during the grind of an NFL season.
