When Travis Kelce stepped onto the football field as a freshman at Cleveland Heights High School in Cleveland, Ohio, no one could have predicted the star player and NFL superstar he would become. But even from those early days, it was clear Kelce had a rare combination of size, skill, and athleticism that made him stand out.
Cleveland Heights football coach Jeff Rotsky still remembers the first time he saw Kelce suit up for the Tigers. “Right away you could tell Travis had something special,” Rotsky recalled. “He was bigger than most of the other kids and just had a natural feel for the game. In practice you would see him make catches or blocks that not many freshman could make. We knew he was going to be a key part of our team for years to come.”
And Rotsky’s prediction proved true. Over the next four years, Kelce developed into a dominant two-way player at tight end and defensive end for the Tigers. His size—he stood at 6’5 and weighed around 230 pounds as a senior—combined with his speed, strength, and athleticism made him nearly impossible for opposing high school players to stop.
During his junior campaign in 2007, Kelce helped lead the Tigers to an 8-3 record and a berth in the OHSAA Division I playoffs. He was named first team All-Lake Erie League that season after hauling in 35 catches for 580 yards and 6 touchdowns on offense, while also racking up 50 tackles and 5 sacks from his defensive end spot.
But it was Kelce’s senior season in 2008 that he truly took over games and established himself as one of the top recruits in the state of Ohio. In Cleveland Heights’ season opener against rival Shaker Heights, Kelce took over from the start. He opened the game with a 60-yard touchdown reception where he simply outran the Shaker secondary. On defense, he recorded two sacks and a forced fumble in the Tigers’ 35-14 victory.
“That first game really set the tone for Travis’ senior year,” Rotsky said. “You could just see his confidence and leadership grow as the season went on. He was the heart and soul of our team.”
Kelce went on to have a monster senior campaign, racking up over 1,000 all-purpose yards and 20 total touchdowns as Cleveland Heights finished with a 9-2 record. His standout two-way performance earned him first team all-state honors and recognition as one of the top tight end recruits in the country.
More than just his production on the field, Kelce’s teammates and coaches say it was his work ethic, leadership, and competitive fire that made him special. “Travis had an insatiable desire to be the best,” said Cleveland Heights quarterback D.J. Crook. “He pushed everyone around him to work harder. There was just something about the way he played that made you not want to let him down.”
That competitive fire was fostered in large part due to Kelce’s close relationship with his older brother, Jason, who also starred as an offensive lineman at Cleveland Heights before going on to have a successful NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The two brothers were fiercely competitive growing up, whether battling each other in the backyard or facing off in the weight room. According to those close to the family, one humbling experience for Travis in particular helped shape his work ethic and bond with Jason.
As the story goes, during Travis’ freshman year of high school, Jason—then a senior—challenged his younger brother to a bench press contest. Confident in his strength even as a young freshman, Travis accepted. But Jason easily outperformed him, leaving Travis humbled. It was in that moment that Travis realized he had to dedicate himself completely in the weight room if he wanted to one day surpass his brother.
From that point on, Travis attacked workouts with a passion, pushing himself to new limits in the weight room under Jason’s guidance. The experience brought the brothers even closer as they motivated each other daily to improve. By Travis’ senior year, he had surpassed Jason in the weight room—a milestone that demonstrated not only his growth but the impact of their sibling rivalry.
That work ethic and competitive fire served Kelce well after high school. He signed with the University of Cincinnati to play tight end under head coach Brian Kelly. In his four years with the Bearcats, Kelce developed into a star, setting the school’s career records for receptions and receiving yards by a tight end.
His production earned him recognition as a first team All-American as a senior in 2012 and helped lead Cincinnati to a Big East Conference championship. Kelce then solidified his status as one of the top tight end prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft when he ran a blazing 4.61 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine at 6’5, 250 pounds.
The Kansas City Chiefs saw Kelce’s rare athleticism and selected him in the third round with the 63rd overall pick. And the rest is history. Kelce has gone on to become one of the NFL’s most productive tight ends over the past decade, earning six Pro Bowl selections and helping lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl title in 2020.
