Coldest KC Chiefs game ends with dozens of fans needing emergency attention

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Tens of thousands of Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins fans are able to say they witnessed the Chiefs win the coldest game ever played at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Dozens of those fans also learned how dangerously cold it was on Saturday.

The Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department manned ambulances stationed at Arrowhead leading up to, and during Saturday’s Wild Card Playoff game.

KCFD said EMTs responded to a total of 69 calls. The response included fans in both the parking lots and inside the stadium. Half of the calls were for hypothermia according to KCFD.

Of the dozens of fans treated, KCFD transported 15 to hospitals. Three fans were transported to be treated for frostbite while seven others needed treatment for hypothermia according to the fire department.

The numbers do not include fans treated by University of Kansas Health staff who manned first aid stations inside the stadium.

Medical experts warned fans who planned to spend hours at the game to be prepared for the bitterly cold weather and windchill.

The game ended up being the fourth-coldest game in NFL history. The official temperature at kickoff for the wild-card playoff game was minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind gusts made it feel like minus-27 degrees outside.

The coldest game in league history remains minus-13 for the 1967 NFL championship, when the Packers beat the Cowboys at Lambeau Field in a game that came to be known as the Ice Bowl. The wind chill that day was minus-48 degrees.
